The Internet

The Internet

Hello reader today I will tell you some general things about internet like, Who started the internet, when first network equipment was used and what was that, who started the www concept which was the first graphical internet browser

Who started or created the internet ?

Ever imagined who was the person behind the idea of internet or who initiated the idea of internet or how the process of internet started. Was your answer "no" ? If so then let me take you to the journey of the internet from it's initial state to as we know it today.

It was not a single person who created the internet that we know and use today. Here the listing of people who contributed for the development of the internet.

The Idea
The initial idea of internet came from Leonard Kleinrock after he published his first paper  "Information flow in large communication nets" on 31-may-1961.

J.C.R. Licklider became first director of Information Processing Technology Office(IPTO) in 1962 and gave his idea of galactic network. Combined the ideas from Licklider, Kleinrock and Robert Taylor helped to create the idea of network that later called "Advance  Research Projects Agency Network(ARPANET)".

Initialization
The internet was first developed in late 1960's in California United States.
The Network Working Group(NWG) held its first meeting in the summer of 1968 at Stanford Research Institute(SRI) chaired by Elmer Shapiro.
Lawrence Roberts and Barry Wessler created Interface Message Processor(IMP) specifications based on "A Study Of Computer Network Design Parameters" published by Elmer Shapiro in December 1968 with SRI and earlier work by Paul BaranThomas Marril and others.
Bolt Beranek and Newman Inc. (BBN) was later awarded the contract to design and build the IMP sub-network.

General public learn about Internet
On July 3rd 1969 the University Of California, Los Angeles(UCLA) put out a press release about introducing the internet to public.

What was first network equipment and when internet was used first ?
On August 29, 1969, the first network switch and first piece of network equipment called "Interface Message Processor(IMP)" was sent to UCLA.
The first data moves from the UCLA host to the switch. The following picture is of Leonard Kleinrock next to IMP.

The first message and Network crash
The first internet message was sent from computer science Professor Leonard Kleinrok's laboratory at UCLA to a computer at SRI on 29th October 1969 at 10:30PM. The connection not only enabled the first transmission to be made but is also considered the first  internet backbone.

The first message to be distributed was "LO" which was an attempt at "LOGIN" by Charley S. Kline to log into SRI computer from UCLA. However, the message was unable to be completed because the system at SRI crashed. The issue was resolved shortly after crash and Charley was able to log into the computer.

The concept of World Wide Web(WWW).
While working at CERN, Tim Berners-Lee developed Hypertext Markup Language(HTML) in 1990, which made a huge contribution to how we know and navigate the internet today.
"info.cern.ch" is the first website developed by Tim Berners-Lee.
On August 23, 1991 Tim Berners-Lee introduces World Wide Web(WWW) to the public. On August 23 1991 WWW became available to the public.
Most peoples consider www as the internet or a seriese of pages and sites that are connected with each other.

First Graphical Internet Browser
Mosaic was the first graphical internet browser. It is officially known as NCSA Mosaic. It was released on 22 April 1993 by the "National Center for Supercomputing Application(NCSA)" with the help of Marc Andreessen and Eric Bina. A big competitor to Mosaic was Netscape which was released a year later.
Today's internet browsers like Internet Explorer, Chrome and Firefox got their inspiration from Mosaic.
